On October 4th, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first object placed by humanity in orbit around a celestial body, thus inaugurating the era of the space race. Inevitably, composers were also inspired by the new adventurous spirit that this era seemed to contain. In 1960, George Russell and a group of jazz stars recorded Jazz in the Space Age, a historic record already featuring some ideas from the composer's revolutionary Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. But what does this music do anyway? Everything. It gravitates. It draws us in, it pushes us away. It allows us to wander around, perhaps looking at this nearby planet, intersecting with a star, perhaps deviating from a meteorite at high speed. Russell wrote the score for Jazz In the Space Age and intentionally left a space open for free improvisation - he fixed the satellites in orbits and the imagination of his celestial bodies did the rest. He brought the universe with all its possibilities and mysteries into the music. A cosmos that could seem infinite to us, just like music. Sixty years later we allow ourselves to gravitate to this score, today with other celestial bodies that gaze upon this music through its unique cosmic dust.

“Implosão” is the second original music project led by spanish trumpeter Ricardo Formoso (03-03-1986 A Coruña, Spain). After his debut as a composer on the album “Origens”, released in December 2017, Formoso presents his new set of compositions at the 10th Porta-Jazz Festival (09-02-2020 Porto, Portugal) accompanied by four excellent musicians who complete an international quintet.

The solidity and dynamism of the canadian saxophonist Seamus Blake, the versatility and sophistication of the spanish pianist Albert Bover and the fantastic duo in the rhythm section by the undisputed Demian Cabaud on the bass and Marcos Cavaleiro on the drums, contribute depth, surprise and magic to this project. They form a beautiful sample of the recent history of jazz, with careers linked to notable figures of the jazz environment from several generations.

“Implosão” contains a repertoire designed to provide a reaction between the molecular structures that configure the essence and voice of the elements of this formation in a context determined by the careful arrangement, improvisation and the discovery of the cosmos.

"Shichishito, seven branched sword. The new album from funcionário borrows its name from a ceremonial artifact, invoking an introspective journey through the alleyways of the main plot/blade that make up our own personal life. A precise and melodic brush painting what feels like blank sound canvases. At the 36 minute mark, after all the detours, we find a smooth and polished image, resulting in one unique experience, exactly like the sword aforementioned.

In comparison to previous releases, this body of work finds its landscapes more fluid and organic, a more familiar sound in its irregular linearity. The various branches of the blade is where we find the continuous stroke that sets the tone to this story’s arch. It’s in the foggy frontier between recordings and sample work that lives this serene ambient record. All branches of life in one single object, sound."
