"Songs for Shakespeare" consists of original musical and performative material where the starting point are Shakespeare's words, taken from several sources and with no apparent connection between them. By glueing these pieces together in a patchwork, a new narrative is created that estends the Shakespearean universe from end to end.

Imagined by Maria João and João Farinha, partners for more than 10 years in the jazz/electronic project OGRE, the idea arises to increase this basic formation of electric pianos, synthesizers, electronics and drums to include a chamber ensemble that through the hands of the composer and orchestrator Sara Ross will give a palette of colours not possible until now, vitalizing this Shakespearean universe with a modern twist.

Microtonal Generative Music

This music is a snapshot of my time living in a (converted) backyard shed while homeless for about 6-8 Months

My living situation was too stressful to do much music writing, this is what little music I made

The cover art is "Ferny" a Monsterra Deliciosa (.. not a fern) It was a present from my partner during the earlier Covid lockdown months, and I suspect, a covert attempt to force me to get more sunlight while my depression and anxiety were in full swing

Special Thanks to Tash and Linda, who most likely saved my life

I had spent two years re-writing my microtonal generative music software and these tracks were made while it was in a prototype state, only now have I finally finished it, and found a place to live

Thanks to all you weirdos that listen to my quirky music

Commissioned by the acclaimed Britten Pears Arts program, Through the Motions was originally meant as an installation with three large, separate, projection screens. The piece features songs of purely-tuned microtonal guitar and voice by Maddie Ashman and is accompanied by a film piece by Clemente Lohr. The film draws parallels between how we as humans harvest natural resources and exploit or trample them, with what we consider pragmatic and efficient.

Since the Industrial revolution, we have rejected nature’s existing sound principles for equal temperament, the 12-note musical structure we have learnt to accept. Convenient as it is for mass manufacturing instruments and practicality, it reflects the tragic colonialism over non-Western cultures, whose music traditions cannot fit into Western standards. In Maddie Ashman’s music, westernised equal temperament and language are deconstructed, asking what is possible by looking at our ancient foundations, and how we need to more than ever.

Eboras - And Then There Were None [2022]

Eboras is old Celtic for yew tree. The city of Évora (Alentejo, Portugal) once was called Ebora by the celtici (Celtic tribe that coexisted with the Lusitanians in the same period) that lived in that area. It was known by the romans as Eborae Cerialis and after they conquered it, Liberalitas Julia. Eboras is my will to keep our celtici origins alive.

"And Then There Were None" tells the story of two great heroes from the lusitanian lore. One is a lusitanian shepherd that became king, the other is a roman general that fell in love with Lusitania and its people.

I hope my effort to introduce them to you will fascinate you has their stories fascinated me.
