Traveling Light is the 28th studio album by Portuguese experimental musician Rafael Toral, released on October 24, 2025, through the label Drag City. 

Musical Concept

The album serves as a companion or "eloquent follow-up" to his critically acclaimed 2024 record Spectral Evolution. While its predecessor used jazz structures as a foundation for abstract synthesis, Traveling Light features more direct, ethereal reinterpretations of classic jazz standards. Toral uses his signature "ambient breeze" guitar and electronic textures to transform these 1930s and 1940s compositions into immersive sonic landscapes.

Live Performances

World Premiere: Debuted at the Venice Biennale in late 2024 under the curation of Caterina Barbieri.

Festival Semibreve: Performed on October 24, 2025, in Braga, Portugal, featuring a woodwind ensemble including flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and flugelhorn.

Upcoming Concert: Scheduled for January 21, 2026, at the Culturgest Auditório Emílio Rui Vilar in Lisbon. 

The album has been widely recognized as a highlight of the year, appearing on multiple "best of 2025" lists. It is available for streaming and purchase on platforms like Bandcamp and Apple Music.

Jupiter, the gas giant in our Solar System, with thunderstorms a thousand times more powerful than on Earth, rainfalls of diamonds in the atmosphere, temperatures below -100°C, plenty of hydrogen, 79 moons and a South pole that looks like an abstract painting, has just the kind of environment this music seems to emanate from.

"Jupiter and Beyond", the second collaborative effort of composer/performer Rafael Toral and percussionist João Pais Filipe as a duo (after "Saturn" in 2016), is definitely not quite a record of Earth music. On the contrary, Jupiter and Beyond, is indeed gas music, unfolding over two long movements without solid body or any tangible outline, between ambient and noise. A music of sheer volume and beauty, icy, massive, in which the elements of Toral's signature, in particular his use of jazz-inspired electronics and feedback, dissolve to become a labile, nebulous, expansive material, occasionally struck by abyssal depressions and masterful densities, magnified by the return, after 17 years of silence, of the electric guitar in Rafael Toral's instrumentarium.

Towards the end of Beyond, the second piece on the record, lurking behind the volutes of feedback, a bell and a bass drum, one can detect from the distance... a barking dog, as a surreptitious and prosaic reminder of where we are here and now, a calling back to Earth. Between sadness and joy, anger and peace, movement and stillness, Jupiter and Beyond is indeed a mirror held out to us, music reflecting our times and that emotionally speaks first of all about us.

"While João Pais Filipe was drummer in the Space Quartet, we played a live duo set. During soundcheck we were jamming for a while on bowed gongs and feedback and lost track of time, it just flowed so well. I joked "we could make a whole record with this!". But later we took the idea seriously and set to record an improvised session at his cymbalsmith workshop (he made the gong on the cover and it was used in the recording). When we listened to the first take the mass of sound was amazing. At some point it reminded me of the complex clusters of sound in Ligeti's music as it appears on Kubrick's 2001 scene "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite". In the end the title felt like an apt choice for Saturn's successor. Back at my studio I felt the need for some more layers of density in some sections. I thought of using trombones, but ended up picking up the electric guitar, which I hadn't used since 2003.”

"AER 7 (the record's only track) is a piece i wrote in 1990, of which a guitar version is included in my debut album, Sound Mind Sound Body, released two years later. It was a move from the earlier "AER" pieces i made from 1987 to 1990, normally done with a drone guitar sound in a shifting, layered structure. AER 7 has a similar kind of structure but it was a departure in the sense that i replaced solid sound with empty space.

I have always regarded AER 7 as a melodic generator, or "generative", a word i would learn later on. It's written in a way that prevents repetition and generates unpredictable results, apart from the pace and the set of notes. I've always been fascinated by Webern's "klangfarbenmelodie" idea and the way the aleatoric melodic line is distributed among different instruments may be a modest reflection of that. Written in my early years, it also shows deep interest in John Cage's composition methods and my involvement with Ambient music.

This is the piano version, beautifully performed by Joana Gama."

Elevation is a collaborative album by musicians Tim Daisy, Rafael Toral, and Mars Williams, released in 2019 on Relay Recordings. The album features three long-form tracks and is a studio recording of an improvised session.

The album was recorded by Alex Inglizian at The Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago, Illinois, on September 16, 2017. It was released digitally and as a limited edition CD of 300 copies. 

Style

Reviewers have described the music as improvised and experimental, creating a dynamic soundscape that blurs the lines between instruments and noise. The interaction between Toral's electronics and Williams' saxophones, supported by Daisy's percussive foundation, results in music that is "melodic without notes, rhythmic with no beat, familiar but strange".

Rafael Toral - Space Quartet [2018]

After the conclusion of the 13-year-long Space Program series, Space Quartet marks a new horizon in Rafael Toral’s ongoing music explorations. Referring both to a record and a band configuration, Space Quartet embodies a maturing moment for the Portuguese musician. As one of the most internationally-recognized figures in the leftfield domains of music, Toral describes the album as “an advanced application of the Space Program principles”: electronic music with a human touch.

Over the years, Toral developed a jazz-like phrasing using abstract electronics. Operating within the context of a typical quartet, Space Quartet features the interplay of two electronic voices, one played by himself, on melodic feedbacks and hacked amplifiers, and one by Ricardo Webbens, on modular synthesizer and other custom stuff; rounding out the quartet is the versatile Hugo Antunes on double bass and the inventive drums of João Pais Filipe, who also plays gongs and bells of his own making.

The electronics are the driving core of the ambitious Space Quartet, setting it apart from many examples of electronics in jazz. Inspired by some of the principles and methods of enigmatic master Sei Miguel, the music develops solely according to the musicians’ free decisions. The result is a sense of flux and ever-renewing forward motion, continuously unfolding into new places, through spirit and matter from jazz-rock to ambient music and “the singing of standards from another planet” (Toral dixit). One thing is for sure: you’ve never heard anything like this before.

On Moon Field, Rafael Toral breaks new ground, it is his first edition that moves outward, beyond the Space Program series. This collection of three extended and interlocking works, marks the beginning of a transitional period into a new phase of work.

Building on the explorations of his almost decade and a half of work with the Space Program, Moon Field seeks a more open sensibility and integrates a range of new elements and new directions. These ele- ments radically reposition the potential interplays of his chosen musical elements.

“Moon Field was originally written for live performance by a configuration of the Space Collective 3,” Toral explains, “It was with Ricardo Webbens on modular synths, Riccardo Dillon Wanke on electric piano and myself on electronic instruments. While working on it, the piece revealed a strange hovering quality, a kind of stasis. It's alive and awake, like all the recent Space Program music, but doesn't seem to want to go anywhere. The music wanted to be something very peculiar and I changed it a lot in response to that. It also revealed what I find a kind of nocturnal mood, as if we were listening to alien signals with satellites crossing the sky under the moonlight.”

Moon Field’s middle section, "The Horizon", sees Toral entering a broader acoustic field. The piece weaves a fresh examination of the ambient music he worked on between 1987 and 2003 with the fabric of post- free jazz-inspired phrasing with electronic instruments. The results extend the free roaming aspects of the Space Program and mark out a distinctive and deeply personal approach to sonic atmospherics. This is the first step into a much larger, richer universe.

Tracks 1 — 5 are from the CD version (Moikai/ Drag City): mastered at Noise Precision in 1999. Tracks (3) and (5) were re-recorded. Tracks (4) and (5) are different from the original release.

Tracks 6 — 8 are from the double LP reissue (Drag City, 2018).

Tracks (6) and (8) previously released on "Early Works" (Tomlab, 2002)

Track 7 is the first studio recording of AER 2, especially produced for the LP. This piece appears as a live recording on the original Ananana release, but this version has slight alterations.
