Sofia Borges: composition (GEMA), percussion, drums, amplified objects, toys, field recording and electronics.
Trips and Findings is Sofia Borges' first solo release.
This double CD consists of a brief retrospective of her work, containing pieces composed and recorded between 2017 and 2022. This album of drums, percussions and electronics, (among other sounds and timbres), results from João Madeira's curatorship and it is the first of the new "Solo Series" of the label 4DaRecord.
"Trips & Findings" is not an end in itself, but a segment of a journey.
It shows four sketches from my travel notebook: what I observe and forget, what I discover, lose and find again, what I listen to, what I touch, and what strikes me. Each of these pages expresses different facets of my work:
1. Trips & Findings (2022) - is a composition that includes circular compositional processes within a linear structure and explores the dimensions of power and vulnerability between the sound entities that shape this composition.
2. Chimeric Offering (2018)
The foundation of this piece is a field recording made in one of Berlin's busiest parks. The recording was made at dawn, with the goal of recording as few sound events as possible, thus capturing moments of near silence. These spaces of near silence were filled with both descriptive and abstract elements, giving body to an imaginary soundscape. Chimeric Offering was commissioned by the festival In Flux - Contemporary Electro-Acoustic Music from Berlin.
3. Winding and Roll (2017)
The fascination with mechanical sounds, toys and music boxes has recurrently influenced my work. The sound sources for Winding and Roll come mostly from sounds caused by rotating or circling movements, in which various melodic elements controlled either by my hands or by software create various shapes and textures.
4. I am 22 (2022)
The name of this piece hides its program: I(mprovisation) Am(sterdam 20(22). It is the only piece from Trips & Findings in which improvisatory methods overtake compositional processes. Without any predefined structures, I recorded this improvisation using many of the instruments, principles and methods described in the previous three pieces.
