ENTÃO FICAMOS é o registo tratado do espetáculo de comunidade que, com o mesmo título, marcou, na noite de 22 de dezembro de 2012, um dos momentos mais altos do encerramento da Capital Europeia da Cultura que, nesse ano, decorreu na cidade Guimarães, transmitido em directo na RTP: arquivos.rtp.pt/conteudos/entao-ficamos/

Produzido pela programação da Área de Comunidade da Capital Europeia, sob direção da professora Suzana Ralha, o espetáculo entrecruzou géneros musicais muito diversos, criadores de diferentes proveniências e estéticas e centenas de vimaranenses oriundos de todo o concelho que subiram a um palco inconvencional numa noite que, no Pavilhão Multiusos de Guimarães, juntou em performance, no seu total, perto de oitocentos artistas, dirigidos musicalmente pelo maestro Peter Bergamin.

Com uma equipa artística composta por António Durães, José Mário Branco, Fernando Lapa, os Mão-Morta, Carlão, Amélia Muge, José Martins, Magna Ferreira, Carlos A. Correia, João Guimarães, Luísa Barriga, Nuno Preto, Cristina Mendanha, Cláudia Ribeiro, Maria João Mota, Rafaela Salvador, Tiago Simães, Fernando Ribeiro e Rui Pereira, o espetáculo que tinha em cena um camião TIR entre outros recursos pesados de montagem cénica, foi o produto de mais de dois anos de trabalho e debates entre esta equipa e as populações, uma iniciativa que recebeu o nome de Projeto Krisis e, na sua fase final, de ensaios, Academia Krisis.

O levantamento dos temas, das questões, dos problemas e das aspirações das pessoas, em mais de 80 reuniões realizadas durante o longo processo preparatório foi, posteriormente, tratado sob os pontos de vista musical e poético pela equipa artística. Deste trabalho aturado e minucioso resultou ainda o agrupamento vocal de comunidade “Outra Voz”, que ainda hoje une dezenas de pessoas das comunidades do concelho em produções, atuações e registos discográficos que ligam a música de raiz popular, com a música de tradição erudita e a experimentação vocal.

Outros participantes no espetáculo foram: Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras conduzida por Peter Bergamin, Orfeão Coelima, Vilancico, Academia de Música Valentim Moreira de Sá, Coral de letras da UP, Grupo de cavaquinhos de Moreira de Cónegos, grupo de percussão RITURB, grupo de percussão Allcateia, grupo de percussão TOKAKI, Escola de concertinas Cédric Cunha (Infantas), Maria Vasquez (acordeão), Napoleão Ribeiro (Gaita de Foles), Paulo Marinho (Gaita de Foles).

Passou um vendaval por aqui

Passagem da década de 1980 para a de 90. Na esteira do boom do pop-rock português, o melhor que ouvimos aconteceu na segunda linha – ou até na terceira. Foi entre os “independentes” (sem contratos com as majors) e os “alternativos” (apresentando-se em lugares mais esconsos e pouco mais podendo, em muitos casos, do que editar em cassete) que os projectos mais interessantes surgiram, porque inovadores e inventivos, por vezes das maneiras mais inesperadas. Se os Nihil Aut Mors, por exemplo, cantavam em Latim, os Duplex Longa levaram a música clássica, a experimentação e o multiculturalismo (já então Mário Resende e Carlos Paes recusavam a designação “músicas do mundo”) para o domínio da canção. No caso deles, da canção instrumental, ou pelo menos “cantada” não por uma voz, mas por um violino. Da canção avant-pop, acrescentemos.

Tiveram impacto, mas não ganharam fama. Não subiram muito na hierarquia do comercialismo, aquela tão artificialmente filtrada pela indústria tuga da música. A imprensa musical e a demais deram, no entanto, por eles, e os Duplex Longa quase ganhavam os seus plenos favores. Mas já se sabe... houve o percalço de uma concorrência entre jornais. Um ia dar-lhes capa, mas uma entrevista a outra publicação que lhe era rival fez com que fossem castigados. Ficaram sem capa. Que caminho poderia ter feito o duo se essa capa se tivesse somado aos vídeos do programa televisivo Pop-Off, várias vezes repetidos pela RTP? Lançaram um CD, “Forças Ocultas”, que foi passado em algumas rádios, e deram um punhado de concertos, sempre esgotados ou perto disso, com públicos esfuziantes e surpreendidos com as suas fórmulas pouquíssimo comuns. Depois, o deslumbramento da comunicação social desvaneceu-se e os convites para tocarem ao vivo foram rareando, até se verem obrigados a darem a aventura por terminada. O capitalismo musical também teve nos Duplex Longa uma vítima, entre as muitas que deixou pelo caminho. É assim, foi sempre assim, esperemos que deixe de ser um dia. É doloroso assistir a mortes injustas como esta.

Neste álbum que junta gravações de ensaios e outras realizadas ao vivo (num, na altura, muito comentado concerto no Instituto Franco-Português), só duas faixas correspondem ao conteúdo de “Forças Ocultas”, uma em versão live e outra antes de chegar à forma com que surge nesse disco. O resto do alinhamento junta temas que apenas foram tocados diante do público ou que se mantiveram inéditos durante todo este tempo. Sim, o factor tempo marcou a sua sonoridade, datou-a, mas aquilo que os Duplex Longa nos ofereceram continua ainda hoje a ser causa de admiração, e daí este CD que os lembra e homenageia. As contas com a história desta dupla e dos seus fãs não estariam saldadas sem que finalmente um novo disco os incluísse e documentasse. Está feito, agora oiçam, porque vale muito a pena lembrar este vendaval (por vezes doce brisa) que passou pela música que por cá se vai criando.

“Ghosts of Electricity” is a soundscapes/ambient/hauntronica/drone collaboration between ex-pat Australian musician Michael Plater (solo artist, Northern Lighthouse Board, Cornish Wreckers), now based in Cornwall, and fellow Australian experimental musician Dean Richards (who played in the seminal late 70s Australian post-punk electronic acts Whirlywirld and Equal Local, and now releases music under the “Disturbed Earth” moniker). “Field Recordings” is a compilation of their work together so far. It’s an aural exploration of landscape and memory, inspired by the myths, folklore, legends, and countryside around their homes in Guildford, Victoria and Bodmin, Cornwall.

All the tracks have been remastered by U.K experimental musician/producer Mark Beazley (Rothko), and the album also features contributions from Portuguese pianist Jaime Oliveira and Italian violinist Massimiliano Gallo. The release is out now via the Cornwall label Dub Cthonic.

Look around you. In recent years ambient music has changed and encountering Jon Hassell's fourth world design has become easy. Most of the time there’s no feeling, no narrative, a nothingness of ideas through layers and layers of pastiche and boring bedroom music. This is not bashing. Just a reminder that sometimes the information trap delays an understanding of how good music really is.

“Cavalcante” is the new release by funcionário (born Pedro Tavares). You’ll find Jon Hassell in these eleven pieces. And yes, sometimes you’ll think about ambient music. Most of the time you’ll wonder about what is really happening. And why it's only now you’re hearing about this twenty-something musician from Setúbal, Portugal.

A little bit more than one minute into “En Garde!”, the opening track, one feels challenged by the idea that everything that was listened up to that moment was a false start. The piece abruptly stops, flips some digital sound, and restarts in a whole new direction. As this happens it becomes obvious we are in for a treat. Those two, three seconds create a sensation that everything happens in a moment that introduces you to funcionário's craft: delicate complex sounds infatuated with the idea of movement and the never-ending notion that there’s no dividers in the fourth world. Music can go beyond that.

As it moves forward – “Verde”, “Sierra” or “Publicidade Arco e Flecha” -, the album (his fourth) morphs around variations or perceptions of ambient / electronic / experimental music. And as the language evolves, it hints on how funcionário keeps stretching the boundaries of digital music as he wishes to advance to a more analog setup. In a way, he confronts foundational ideas while having breakthroughs and realizing he is at a top level. Justifiably ambitious, bright and discreetly edgy. We dare to say: monumental.

There’s something familiar in the sounds that Angélica Salvi creates. In her previous record, “Phantone”, it was easy to get lost in the idea of nostalgia / past that could be listened coming from her harp.

For “Habitat”, her second record, the approach is tremendously different. She doesn’t linger in the past, she expects you to fulfill the present side-by-side with her. The idea was to create music that could be played and processed in real time. It is also the first time Angélica Salvi is working around the idea of songs – instead of pieces – and elaborating on narratives that suit that purpose.

Recorded in May on her own studio – Garagem 16 -, “Habitat” is contemporary music with the essence of pop. Angélica doesn’t exactly try a genre approach, her music is freer of restrains and shows her freedom of thinking music as a musician but also as someone that has been working on film and constantly shows her creations more in the essence of sound than exactly music per se.

The sounds of “Habitat”, since the first seconds of “Nan”, the opening song, are ethereal and melody focused, even if sometimes those melodies chase paths that are somehow labyrinthic.That doesn’t mean that the listener gets lost. There’s always a guiding light. The choice for a more direct approach on this recording proves how clear, enlightened, and focused Angélica Salvi’s sounds is.

There’s no tricks. Just something that sounds real, profound, where you can listen to Angélica’s hands moving and touching the strings. And be completely mesmerized as she continues to pursue melodies that guides the listener to the most beautiful of places.

O encontro entre Joana Gama e Vítor Rua é uma viagem idiomática, painel de linguagens entre os tutti; a variação e a multiplicidade idioletal torna insusceptível qualquer classificação estilística e tipológica unívoca, pois é uma montagem heterofónica; é um fluxo descontínuo e desconstrutivo, com diferenciadas frentes idioletais e idiomáticas.

O idioleto, ou seja, o discurso singular e privado destes músicos, é uma função esquizóide, impõe o seu selo a toda a sintomatologia, exibe um código, privado e independente, de um só locutor, emerge da significação catártica da experiência musical.

In the early 1990s John Fletcher began studying classical guitar at the “Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa” (National Conservatory of Lisbon) with Professor Lopes e Silva, and jazz at the “Hot Club

de Portugal” jazz school, with Mário Delgado and Pedro Madaleno as teachers. Later he studied

at the “Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa” with Professors Piñeiro Nagy, António Gonçalves

and Olga Prats. JF also regularly attended the composition courses oriented by composer Emmanuel Nunes held at Calouste Gulbenkian foundation, and participated in Masterclasses by David Russell, Hopkinson Smith, Rolf Lislevand, Costas Cotsiolis, Darko Petrinjak, Joaquín Clerch, Hubert Käppel,

Carlo Marchione, Marco Socías, Robert Brightmor, Dejan Ivanovich, Javier Hinojosa, Turibio Santos, and others. In 2000 JF proceeded his studies at the Musikhögskolan i Malmö, Sweden, with

Professors Gunnar Spjuth and Göran Söllscher, where he learned to play Altgitarren (11 string alto guitar). By the composers request, JF played António Pinho Vargas’s guitar composition at the series of concerts sponsored by Culturgest in 2002 "António Pinho Vargas – Obra Completa." In 2011 JF completed a Masters in guitar teaching, at the Piaget Institute of Almada, where he developed a research on music in Protestant communities in Lisbon in between 1945 and 1965, under guidance of Professors Helena Ribeiro de Castro and Dejan Ivanovich as supervisors. In addition to regularly perform solo and chamber music concerts, and to participate on recordings of various music styles, JF also collaborates in projects covering different periods and styles, here highlighted: Jogralesca, Orquestra de Jazz Humanitária, Coro Gospel de Azeitão, Omaira, and duos with clarinetist Fausto Corneo and Luthier Orlando Trindade. Currently JF is working with renowned composers, developing new repertoire for the Altgitarren. Along with his concert activity JF has been dedicated to teaching classical guitar at different conservatories in Portugal, and currently teaches at the Conservatório Regional de Setúbal and Conservatório Regional de Palmela.

To celebrate our first five years, we are releasing a retrospective compilation called ‘Five Years of Street Mission Records’ collecting songs from all our artists including Hesanobody, Delafaye, Niki Moss, Marinho, Time for T, Monday, Ailbhe Reddy, Cavalo55, Ricky Lewis and Elephant Path – full tracklisting below.

The collection features three songs specially recorded for the occasion - Delafaye original 'Rolling Thunder' which is magical, Time for T’s stunningly beautiful cover of Paul Simon’s ‘Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes’, and the long overdue recording of ‘Long Ride Home’ from Marinho & Cavalo55, a cover of a Patty Griffin classic. A video of their wonderful performance of it at our Street Mission Records night in Lisbon earlier this year will be released too.

Out on cassette and digitally. The digital version comes with two bonus tracks from the two newest members of the Street Mission family - Elephant Path, with the release of the brand-new dreamy song 'Getty Villa Garden', and Ricky Lewis with the first new song he released on the label ‘Perfect Light (Jimmy’s Song)’, closing out the compilation in the most perfect way possible.

Profits from the sale of the cassette will be given to União Audiovisual.

This album was recorded on 1/4" tape format using an 8 track Fostex A8 with a Teac model 3 mixer. Mastered to two track Teac at 7.5 IPS tape speed. This album is dedicated to Decker - our beloved family dog. Jan 1st 2008 - Nov 30th 2021.

Produced by Claude Lavender and Larry Diamond. All instruments and programming by Claude Lavender except guitar solos by Mike Tuyp on tracks 3,4,5,7,8,10 and bass guitar by Jeff Smith on tracks 6,7 and 10.

Written and recorded in Lavender Studios between January 2021 into April of 2022. Engineered and mixed/mastered by Larry Diamond. Art direction and photography by Christine McKenna, with tape design by Ian Kilpatrick.

Bernardo Tinoco & Tom Maciel - NoMad Nen​ú​far [2022]

This duo was idealized by Bernardo Tinoco (saxophones, flute and duduk) and Tom Maciel (piano, synths and drum machine) focusing on the collective composition of original repertoire for their instruments.

Not wanting to restrict the music to an exclusively acoustic context, the duo's proposal also includes the exploration of electronic sonorities through the use of synthesizers and audio processing as the basis of the creative process. The will to explore an aesthetic that could balance composition, improvisation and electronics emerged during their joint academic path. Having met in Lisbon, the two musicians developed since 2016 a strong academic and professional relationship, discovering affinities through various musical projects.

Faced with the need to adapt to smaller formations, as a result of the various constrains caused by the pandemic COVID-19, the duo found their way through the creation of this project. Influenced by numerous music artists of the new generation and being aware of a vast discography for saxophone and piano released over the past decades, Tinoco and Maciel explore their skills as multi-instrumentalists in search for their own voice.

The debut album "NoMad Nenúfar”, released by Clean Feed, also features the Portuguese jazz drummer João Pereira, performing on three tracks.
