Pastoral is an experimentation and an artwork in itself, exploring traditional music in Portugal. It delves into the monotonous tones of pre-Christian folk music, intertwining them with the richness of contemporary jazz and pop. It captures the manner in which people communicated from mountain to mountain in ancient times. The album begins with "Mirandum," a song I composed the day before my child was born, marking the inception of this project. Collaborating with a friend from my native region in northern Portugal, we produced this album together. For a taste of his music, search for the band Fadomorse. Additionally, I invited the talented pianist Lana GasparØtti to join me on the instrumental tracks "Pastoral" and "Balabala," both of which I co-produced with Andreas Sidenius. The final track, "Balabala," incorporates a sample of Giacometti depicting shepherds leading their sheep to pasture while singing "Arriba ao monte, balabala," roughly translating to "up in the mountain, come on, come on." I reinterpreted the song in my own style with the assistance of Lana and Andreas.

O segundo single que antecipa Pendular, a estreia formal dos Mazarin em álbum, tem por título "R.B. - j.b.".

"R.B. - j.b." conta com a participação de Rodrigo Brandão, artista brasileiro de spoken word que se tem mostrado muito activo na cena nacional tendo no último par de anos editado os álbuns Outros Espaço (com a participação de membros da Sun Ra Arkestra) e, mais recentemente, Outros Estado (trabalho em que contou com a nata dos improvisadores nacionais e vários músicos de primeira linha do Brasil).

Quando foi desafiado pelos Mazarin, Brandão não vacilou. Num antigo saco de discos de papel da loja de Nova Iorque Earwax, cidade em que passou algum tempo, Brandão escreveu uma letra de homenagem a jamie branch, trompetista ligada à International Anthem que tinha falecido muito recentemente (desapareceu em Agosto de 2022, poucas semanas após ter passado por Lisboa) quando as gravações de Pendular estavam a arrancar.

Nesta emotiva peça, Rodrigo Brandão descreve jamie "sorrindo selvagem, como quem canta uma canção de amor", numa sentida, funda e sincera homenagem a que os Mazarin correspondem com um pedaço de jazz espiritual de primeira apanha.

Os Mazarin são Léo Vrillaud nos teclados, Francisco Bettencourt em saxofone e flauta, Vicente Booth na guitarra, João Spencer no Baixo e João Romão na bateria. Um quinteto que em Pendular oscila entre a tradição e o futuro não hesitando na hora de cruzar o jazz com outras desafiantes linguagens."

"The second single that antecipates Pendular, Mazarin's upcoming debut album, is called "R.B. - j.b.".

This track features Rodrigo Brandão, a brazilian spoken word artist who has been very active within Portugal's musical scene, releasing the albuns Outros Espaço (in collaboration with members of the Sun Ra Arkestra) and Outros Estado (which features some of Portugal's finest improvisers and several first-line musicians from Brazil) in the last couple of years.

When challenged by Mazarin, Brandão didn't hesitate. In an old bag from New York's record store Earwax, Brandão wrote lyrics that served as a homage to jamie branch, an International Anthem-related trumpet player who had passed away in August 2022, a few weeks shortly after her passage in Lisbon and around the time Pendular's recording sessions were taking place.

In "R.B. - j.b.", Rodrigo Brandão describes jamie "smiling wildly, like someone who sings a love song", in a heartfelt, deep and sincere homage to which Mazarin reply in a spiritual jazz take.

Mazarin are Léo Vrillaud (keys), Francisco Bettencourt (sax and flute), VIcente Booth (guitar), João Spencer (bass) and João Romão (drums). In Pendular, this quintet oscillates between tradition and the future without fear of intersecting jazz with other demanding aesthetics."
