Yury Mikhaylovich Aleksandrov (1914–2001) was a Russian classical composer and editor, known primarily for his chamber music, including a notable Sonata for Trumpet and Piano.
Career and Life
Wartime Service: During World War II, as German troops neared Moscow in 1941, Aleksandrov joined the 8th Moscow Volunteers' Rifle Division. He fought for several months before being ordered back to Moscow and then evacuated to Saratov with other artists while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory.
Musical Career: After the war, he joined the Composers' Union with a recommendation from Dmitry Shostakovich. He was also significantly influenced by Nikolai Myaskovsky. For over 30 years, he worked as an editor for the state music publishing house, Muzgiz.
Compositions: His work largely falls under the classical and chamber music genres. His most recognized piece is likely the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (published in 1965), which has been described as having neoclassical elements reminiscent of Prokofiev and Myaskovsky. Recordings of his work are available on streaming services like Spotify.
