Anagnorisis é o quinto álbum de estúdio internacional do pianista e compositor indonésio Dwiki Dharmawan, lançado mundialmente em novembro de 2025 pela MoonJune Records.
O título do álbum deriva da palavra grega para "reconhecimento", refletindo a sua gravação em Atenas, Grécia (dezembro de 2024), com o apoio da Embaixada da Indonésia. A sonoridade funde o jazz contemporâneo e o jazz-rock progressivo com elementos étnicos indonésios e influências do sudeste europeu.

Composer and conductor Serge Koussevitzky famously asserted that “musicians are always the best ambassadors.” Perhaps no better proof of his claim can be found than the singular Indonesian instrumentalist and composer Dwiki Dharmawan, both literally - this album was partly supported by the Indonesian Embassy in Athens, Greece - and in his role as an exemplary envoy for his people’s profoundly rich musical inheritance abroad.
Anagnorisis, the latest in Dharmawan's series of widely varied and impeccably crafted albums for MoonJune Records, might well be the most fully realized expression yet of his expansive musical vision. While deeply grounded in the sophisticated melodic and rhythmic intricacies of his native archipelago, where he’s long been celebrated for his work bridging serious and popular realms, Dharmawan also looks beyond those traditions for inspiration, joining with players from disparate cultures to blend the best of their respective worlds into a meta-music of depth, beauty, and vitality that transcends mere collage.
Anagnorisis - "recognition" in Greek - exemplifies this transcultural spirit, and indeed is emblematic of the governing MoonJune ethos, bringing the Indonesian master together with eminent Israeli-born saxophonist and writer Gilad Atzmon (Robert Wyatt, Pink Floyd) and a quartet of simpatico Greek musicians (Kimon Karoutzos, Harris Lambrakis, Vironas Ntolas, and Nikos Sidirokastritis) on a program of Dharmawan originals and improvisations, with production assistance from a German, an Italian, and a Dane, overseen by the globetrotting Balkan Leonardo "Marco Pavlo" Pavkovic himself. Yet for all the diversity of its participants' backgrounds, the resulting union never feels forced, instead reflecting an inherent mutual trust and deep respect for one another as both people and musicians.
Dharmawan's Indonesian sensibilities come to the fore in tracks like "Gambang Ney," with its pirouetting Near Eastern ney flute standing in for its Southeast Asian counterpart, and "Pacu Javi,” whose elaborate rhythms subdivide and accelerate in the manner of the classical gamelan repertoire. Elsewhere, the musical mood ranges from pastoral ("Perjuangan," evoking memories of the late ECM piano master John Taylor), to the rambunctious, invigorating freebop of "Jazz For Freeport,” to the blues connotations of the freely improvised “Ya Kita Bisa.” No single player dominates; each is granted space to shine, with captivating solos galore interspersed with as-one ensemble passages. All of the proceedings are captured in a mix that’s both enveloping in its warmth and of sparkling clarity.
At a time when the very ideal of a mutually supportive, multicultural global society is under attack by forces of narrow nationalism and intolerance, such brave and unapologetic statements of shared humanity as Anagnorisis are more vital than ever to our species’ well-being. May such musical ambassadors as Dwiki Dharmawan and his fellow travelers long continue to blaze us a trail forward.
