Recorded in the water of Deer Creek, Crete, Illinois, during July and August, 2020, in the tunnel under a railway bridge. Played on a refretted archtop acoustic guitar, for a 3:2 x 7:4 tuning lattice, adapted from La Monte Young’s Well Tuned Piano. 9 pieces in sound-time of midwest woodlands. Music in morning wind in cottonwood leaves; afternoon rain and thunder; night crickets and trains. Vault echo full stone resonance in water’s flow; tunneling from mind, to ear, to nature.  

Music in the heat and rain; day and night; singing birds and singing insects. Movement of water; myths on limbs; edge motions in flood. Resonance constituting other around; a go harmonic, come back, send, more. Here light’s echo travel; opening and field of string-wood flow.

Un’infinita distesa di evanescente malinconia che si irradia placida poggiandosi lieve su ogni angolo che raggiunge. È un velo agrodolce di morbida luce a scaturire dal primo frangente di recente, imposta solitudine vissuto da Andrea Porcu, un quieto mare che si muove lento trasportando le indefinite sensazioni del momento in atto.

Trame sature, scaturenti dallo strumento scelto per questo nuovo viaggio a firma Music For Sleep, scorrono con andamento cullante fino a divenire ipnotico flusso ipnagogico diviso in quattro sinuosi movimenti. È un’atmosfera rarefatta, sospesa tra realtà e dimensione onirica, modulata differentemente in ognuno dei suoi tratti per divenire avvolgente nebbia amniotica che annulla ogni coordinata spazio temporale disegnando un sintetico limbo nel quale rifugiarsi in attesa di un nuovo inizio.

Un’eterea permanenza in un mare di delicato suono.

Jason McMahon, former member of Skeletons (and the Girl-Faced Boys, and the Kings of All Cities, Skeletons Big Band), founding member of Shinkoyo Records, founding member of The Silent Barn (recording studio and performance venue in Ridgewood, Queens), is finally stepping out on his own and releasing his long-awaited solo debut: Odd West. After touring for a decade with several Brooklyn-based bands (Skeletons, Fashe Mello, Glasser, Janka Nabay and The Bubu Gang, Chairlift), Jason took an extended break from touring to focus on solo work and his personal life. The music that came out of this quiet period is a departure from everything he has done before, as he began writing it not for a performance in Brooklyn, but for a family reunion in his native state of Colorado. The uniqueness of this opportunity encouraged him to further challenge himself: Although he was a talented guitarist with jazz chops and a growing facility in experimental MIDI-triggered performance, he instead picked up an acoustic guitar, tuned it to a completely unfamiliar tuning and made himself develop finger-picking technique for the first time. The writing continued beyond the family reunion, and as McMahon developed the compositions and techniques, he continued to play for family gatherings, performing working versions of these songs at four friends’ and family’s wedding ceremonies over the course of 2018, including his own. The songs on Odd West all come from this process: 14 tracks unified by more than just the same unique tuning, created to underscore life-changing events without drawing attention away from them. Experimental music written for traditional family gatherings.

The lyrics followed out of this process in an unexpected way. As he was writing songs that drew the listener’s focus in multiple emotional directions, McMahon wanted to write music that sounded like it had words, but actually didn’t. For some songs, he tried to create this sort of “dream language”: that feeling of almost hearing, just barely-but-not-quite-understanding. In the same way that the music is a subdued yet rich and complex tapestry performed as accompaniment to wedding ceremonies, the words of Odd West seem to sit just out of focus, just out of the realm of comprehension, as a mere ornament to the emotion of the moment. The one exception to this method of lyric writing is on “Oh, Moon!”, for which he enlisted the lyrical talent of his friend and fellow vocalist on Odd West, former bandmate in the Bubu Gang, Boshra AlSaadi (Teen), to write words in her native language of Arabic.

Odd West was engineered and co-produced by Daniel Schlett, who runs Strange Weather Recording Studio in Brooklyn. Fellow Oberlin alumni Jon Leland (Skeletons, Sun Araw, Janka Nabay) and Moppa Elliot (Mostly Other People Do The Killing) play drums and bass, respectively, and Sam Sowyrda (Dan Deacon, Cloud Becomes Your Hand) plays percussion. Original album art and its associated 3D animated video for the song Sunshine for Locksmith were created and directed by the brilliant Pixel Mozart, pseudonym of artist Andrew Strasser, who has designed iconic album covers for Girl Talk, Andrew WK, Co La, Oneohtrix Point Never, and many others.

(Se carregarem nas músicas encontrarão pequenas grandes dissertações acerca de cada uma que poderão elucidar, divertir, iluminar e aborrecer; e talvez fazer com que passem a gostar menos delas, ou mais. É conteúdo sobre conteúdo! Isto não tem preço!)

Coincidentemente (ou não), durante a grande pandemia de 2020 (lembram-se?!) senti grande inspiração para criar música. Mas fazer música só para nós não tem tanta piada como fazer música para os outros.

Eu não me sentia confortável a partilhar as canções que vou fazendo, mas calhou ter amigos que parecem apreciar estas canções e que me incentivaram a partilhar com o mundo as musiquetas que fazia, portanto assim fiz.

O meu meio de eleição para partilhar aquilo que crio é geralmente o Instagram, e então decidi encher-me de coragem e expor-me como nunca tinha exposto, e filmar-me a tocar praticamente todas as músicas que fui fazendo e publicar os vídeos dos «takes» mais bem sucedidos na minha conta do Instagram.

Este álbum é apenas uma recolha do som de (quase) todos esses vídeos que depois tentei editar de modo que não vos furasse os tímpanos e fosse ligeiramente mais claro.

A qualidade é rafeira, é certo: não estão a ouvir canções gravadas num estúdio caro (algumas foram gravadas no carro) com os meios mais sofisticados, estão a ouvir músicas por vezes gravadas apenas como vídeo num telemóvel.

Mas não confundam isso com «música de má qualidade» só porque é música de quem nem lavou a cara.

É que tal como acontecia nos vídeos, isso não é remela: é o brilho dos meus olhos.

Maria & DarkSunn - Crooked N' Grinded [2020]

Maria and DarkSunn join forces and unite themselves with “Crooked n’ Grinded”, a split tape (like those ones we used to listen to in the 90’s), which represents their journeys, their routines and their ferry, train, bus or car trips. Those trips are always great moments for reflection, for thinking about life and work, for thinking about new songs and projects and also great moments for field recording, whether or not they are always full of human diversity, sounds, colours...full of everything.

In our lives, we all spent a lot of time on transports or traffic. So that we should take advantage of this time like them. Thinking about life, about new ideas and listening to new and contemplative music. Every place has its beauty. And if you look into the suburbs carefully, you will find some poetry in those ugly buildings, busy people, and loud streets.

That’s what “Crooked n’ Grinded” represents. The place you live and grow, tells many things about who you are. Maria and DarkSunn are a great example of that. Their roots are strictly in their music. And they’re both proud of that.

Depending on your trip, you can choose which side you want to listen to, in our limited cassette edition, which artwork is by Oker, one of the most important portuguese writers (the best way to illustrate their/our suburbs).

Normally time flies so fast that the details can´t even be seen. If one slows everything down, what a myriad of small preciosities will, all of a sudden, exist. A world of endless curious mysteries will unfold.

The same is always different. And those differences, all together, create a transcendental oneness.

‘Heavy Light’ marks the return of Norton with an album which is a pact on how to deal with the intimacy in the pop song. On building future memories. Without nostalgia or regrets. With sharing and love.

A deeply urban album that, still, doesn’t cease to drive us to look at breathtakingly vast and bucolic landscapes. As if, in one minute, we were at the top of a skyscraper in Tokyo, contemplating the architectural infinity, and, in the next, travelling without destination, in the open sea, with the wind and the currents of the ocean.

Each song is, in its own way, a mirror of the confused times in which we live. However, they bring optimism and hope challenged by the shadow of the unknown. And, of course, again, the love that runs like the sweat on any dance floor. Free rein, flying backpack, the city streets seen from above, bursting. Everything can happen.

‘Heavy Light’ consists of nine songs written and recorded between Castelo Branco, Lisbon, Vila Velha de Ródão and Mértola – Portugal.
