In 2018 André Gonçalves and Casper Clausen proposed Jardins Efémeros Festival (Viseu, Portugal) to have a residence where we would be recording new music in the center of the city in an old abandoned café where the doors would always be open, where people could come and see us work toward the final presentation at the end of the festival.
Our initial statement from 2018:
At this years edition of Jardins Efémeros, André and Casper propose to develop and present a brand new collaboration during their artistic residency. At a closer look, the ideia of André and Casper composing together would not be so obvious, taking in account their distinct musical paths, but previous spontaneous collaborations were very surprising for both musicians and tickled their curiosity for what would happen if both would dedicate enough time to create a combined body of work. This residence allows the opportunity to set up and work in a multispeaker environment, creating a sound installation throughout the whole festival. Where visitors are invited to experience the creative process as it happens. The musician’s bodies on display in a continuously open impromptu recording session, leaning towards an idea of transparency and continuity between the creation process and the final presentation.
This initial idea soon organically changed as most artists from the festival eventually would end up hanging around in our space and as we were working on new music many organically joined in other Casper kindly invite and eventually they agreed to participate, the resulting music was greatly influenced by all these guests!
Every day at 10 o'clock we would playback the music we did that day to the central plaza spatialized through an 8 speaker octophonic system.
On the final day we played the whole piece live including most artists playing they're own parts plus a chorus assembled with local singers and conducted by Casper.
