With the same spontaneity that children bring to play, BARANANU embraces musical creation as an exercise in freedom and collective discovery. The group - consisting of Eduardo Carneiro Dias (drums), Xavier Nunes (electric bass), João Pedro Dias (trumpet), Fábio Gil (saxophone), José Pedrosa (keyboards), and Fábio Mota (percussion) - constructs a rich and multifaceted soundscape where jazz, disco, and progressive rock merge in a constant dialogue with improvisation.
'FUNGHI' was produced, mixed, and mastered by Manuel dos Reis at Pôr do Som studio, capturing the energy of the band's live performances. "This album is the natural result of four years of musical growth, including the unique challenges that the pandemic brought us," shares the band. "During pre-production, we intensified our collaborative approach with almost daily rehearsals, where each member actively contributed to the composition, resulting in more sophisticated arrangements and a truly shared artistic vision."
United by their education at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE), where most members completed their Jazz degrees, BARANANU represents a new generation of Portuguese musicians. Its members have accumulated notable collaborations with artists such as Omar Acosta, Guillermo Klein, Seamus Blake, Jeff Lederer, and Susana Santos Silva, while also being part of relevant projects like Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos, Innerville, Jazz Ensemble do Norte, and Lucifer Pool Party, among others.
Echoing references ranging from Porto's own Sensible Soccers and Bardino to BADBADNOTGOOD, Boards of Canada, Stereolab, and Kamasi Washington, BARANANU has developed a sonic identity that reflects both the effervescence of the Portuguese jazz scene and a contemporary international vision.
